Metal aerosol cans are usually made from tin plated steel, or aluminium. Some local authorities accept cans for recycling provided that the aerosols are empty and the plastic lids are placed into a regular bin. In normal use aerosols cans maintain pressure, to release which processing involves appropriate can recycling technology: under other circumstances, and due to the flammable content, cans should not be squashed or pierced after use. In the UK:

  • Each year around 600 million aerosols are used
  • Aerosols account for 4% of the metals packaging
  • About 25,000 tonnes of tin plated steel are available from recycling aerosol
  • About 4,500 tonnes of high grade aluminium are available from recycling aerosol
