Cadmium is a soft, bluish-white metal. Most cadmium is recovered as a byproduct of zinc and lead mining the mineral ore for Cadmium is Greenockite, Approximately three quarters of industrial requirement is for the manufacture of Ni-Cd batteries, with cadmium metal or powder forming part of the negative electrode material. Much of the remainder is use to produce coloured cadmium pigments.
