It is common practice in many European countries to collect separated green waste, which is then composted. However, only a handful of local authorities, including some in Hampshire, separately collect green waste in the UK. In Hampshire 60,000 tonnes of green waste are processed into Pro-Grow organic soil conditioner each year. To be taken into consideration are seasonal variations in waste arisings as well the impact the weather can have on quality of composted materials. UK authorities also run schemes whereby Christmas trees are collected for chipping. Such schemes are helpful in advertising local authority recycling services. Some UK authorities charge for collection of through the sale of green bins or bags.
