Packaging in household waste forms the dominant proportion of the UK glass waste stream. Reports estimate waste glass arisings in the container sector to be in excess of 2.4 million tonnes per year. Life cycle analyis of glass products indicates that there is a clear benefit for recycling in respect of energy savings: large amounts of energy are needed to convert raw materials into glass, such that 30 gallons of oil are saved for every tonne recycled.
