Group 11 elements are to be found at the bottom of the reactivity table. The group is also referred to as occupying column 1B of the table. Elements have a valency of +1. In spite of this valency gold, at the foot of the group, is extremely unreactive. The resistance of these metals to oxidation in air and water has lead to their use in minting coins and medals, and they are sometimes referred to as "coinage" and together with the platinum group metals as the "noble" metals.
