The Number of transistors on an integrated circuit has increased in line with Moore's law (actually a prediction). Moore's law has a number of consequences:

  1. Up to date IT software may require require new computers with integrated circuits with sufficient power to run programmes.
  2. It may not be possible to upgrade an existing computer with more modern components.
  3. Where it is possible to upgrade some components there may be a limited increase in speed at which programmes run due to slow componentry elsewhere.

For these reasons the best way in which to find a new life for old IT eqipment is through technologies such as Open Source Solutions where software can run on older computers, saving on costs.
