Niobium is a soft, grey-white, somewhat ductile and malleable, metallic element. It is often found within the same formations of minerals as tantalum. When it was discovered it was given the name columbium and the chemical symbol Cb. It was renamed niobium in 1844.

The use of niobium within capacitors found in mobile phones, as a replacement for tantalum, has been investigated.
