The English chemist and physicist W.H. Wollaston (1766-1828) isolated the metal from Platinum and gave it the name Rhodium.

The market price of Rhodium rose rapidly in the late 1990's as a consequence of high demand for use within tri-metal catalysers. Each catalytic converter contains a total of approximately 2 g of Platinum group metals: the demand for Rhodium worldwide amounts to more than 80 per cent of the annual production of the metal.
